The Suns playmaker received 57 first-place votes and 924 points overall from a panel of 125 sports writers and broadcasters in the United States and Canada.
However as a kid he always wanted to be a soccer player, in fact the first word he said as a baby was "Goal", and his father was actual a professional soccer player in South Africa.
Steve says " Playing soccer as a kid helped me a lot in becoming a point guard, the change of direction, timing, space, creativity, angle and the vision of the game are all things that helped me in playing basketball, I'm lucky to play soccer at a young age"
Steve still plays soccer in the summer parks. maybe that is his secret of being one of 11 players only in the history of the NBA to win back to back MVP honers.
